  • Overview

    In this role, responsibilities will include to analyze a loan request and approve or decline, counsel and cross sell products and services to meet the member’s needs. Assist all Patelco branches including the Atwater/Mortgage call centers, CUDL department and the Collection/Bankruptcy department. Provide branch assistance in developing the confidence in processing loans and to focus on all loan opportunities. Ensure loans approved improve the quality of the loan portfolio.   Additional functions include ensuring interest rates are accurate, underwriting workout loans, responding to emails submitted to the department and any other duties assigned while monitoring the loan queue throughout the day.


    Essential Duties

    • Perform all essential duties as listed for a Consumer Lending Underwriter I
    • Act as Team Lead/Supervisor in the absence of the manager, applying leadership and problem solving skills
    • Assign individual departmental duties where needed
    • Support Patelco Team with questions and/or problem solving with loan funding in Origins 
    • Assist Consumer Lending Underwriter I with contacting MSR’s by phone for clarification of their loan request submitted in order to understand the needs of the members, prolonging the application from going back and forth and delaying decision 
    • Participate in branch training session, traveling to branch when needed
    • Occasional visits to branches for branch training
    • Provide detailed and efficient training to new Patelco Team members processing loans
    • Update weekly rate comparison and share any new products and services other financial institutions are offering  
    • Exercise good judgment to make exceptions without sacrificing the integrity of the credit union
    • Understand and have superior knowledge of Patelco product and services
    • Diligently detect and handle any potential fraud or identity theft activity including the research of IP addresses for any possible matches leading to fraud rings 
    • Be able to multi-task in between the loan queue and telephone calls; still be detail oriented 
    • Review proof of income, residence, social security cards, picture IDs, including other documentation that staff needs assistance with
    • Handle loan re-reviews requesting manager review, probing MSR’s for additional information to build a loan story needed to overturn a decision 
    • Escalate situations to manager only when necessary providing complete information and solution to resolve matter
    • Support ongoing car sales as acting analyst
    • Work daily and weekly reports making any necessary corrections needed in timely manner as well as any other projected assigned
    • Provide recommendations after review of the monthly charge off report in an effort to manage risk, educate and familiarize with any patterns that could prevent further loan losses
    • Review faxes that come in through E-Fax when not made attention to specific individual
    • Verify preapprovals for Auto Buying Service
    • Recommend to Patelco Team Members other alternatives to loan products beneficial to members based on circumstance
    • Detect potential hardship in repayment of debts based on one’s credit report and offer possible workout loans to ensure Patelco continues to be paid by offering a more affordable payment and term
    • Recommend loan deferrals or lower reduction if member is facing a temporary hardship
    • Educate Patelco Team Member on the importance of building loan stories; asking and probing for more information from the applicant/member and the importance of addressing alerts for the protection of our membership and credit union
    • Enhance Patelco Team Member’s lending knowledge associated with member and credit union benefits by ongoing staff education and training
    • Report to Patelco’s internal I.T. department any loan origination system errors, bugs, providing adequate descriptions of error for easier resolving
    • Handle help tickets that are forwarded from I.T. department pertaining to Origin errors
    • Assist in the achievement of credit union management goals and to develop and maintain a professional, productive and supportive work environment
    • Understand and comply with all applicable federal and state laws and banking regulations (including those related to OFAC and Bank Secrecy Act / Anti-Money Laundering compliance) and Patelco Credit Union’s policies and procedures.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma
    • External candidates must possess 5 years in the consumer underwriting field having processed and analyzed consumer loans efficiently

    Competencies Required

    • Proficient in MS Windows and Office (Word & Excel)
    • Proficient on Summit, Origins, Loan Hunter and Akcelerant
    • Proficient in English, both oral and written
    • Bilingual in any language, preferred but not required

    Ability to travel as needed
